Horrifying Mondays is all about what scares us. The horror behind the curtains that we refuse to open, the creatures in the dark, and sometimes those creatures that are in the open!
Each Monday will bring a different horror… to help you cope with the horror that is Monday with the horrors that are in the fantasy world.
Horror for Today: Zombies!
For Pete, a rural Midwesterner, the Zombie Crisis was just media hype and mass hysteria, until the zombie apocalypse came to town.
A chance encounter with a lone zombie leads to his banishment from his virus-fearing community. After a violent showdown, a local despot offers Pete a choice: death or scavenging for supplies. Pete’s decision results in an odyssey through a zombie-infested city and a frantic race back home to save his family.
It’s interesting how sometimes you don’t really see zombies in zombie stories. In the beginning of this book the main threat is actual a town full of what are supposed to be bad guys; The Wolf Pack. What I loved is the fact that life still goes on even when all of this horror is in the world. We still have to worry about our friends and most importantly our family, and that was not lost in this story.
The worst thing about this is the fact that we all try to look the other way when bad things start to happen. If it’s not happening to us then it must not really be happening, right? Well, this is what will get us all into some deep trouble if anything bad really does happen. Sadly, that’s what happens here.
I did really enjoy Patrick MacAdoo’s writing but the beginning was really slow. So slow that I almost decided not to read this. I really hate putting books down though so I kept at it and it wound up being good. It’s not the best zombie book that I’ve read, definitely doesn’t have the psychological and physical horror that I’m used to, but it did have some up’s and of course downs.
When the zombies do show up they are scary. Zombies that can think are a no-no! It’s not expressly written out what the zombies are but it is eluded to people that are infected or have survived the infection but are still zombified! You don’t have to die and be reanimated to be a zombie. That would just suck! But again, these zombies can also think for themselves so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to crave brains and running around eating those you don’t like, just hope your family doesn’t get in the way!
In short: This was a good read, just hard to get into.
